Born on 24th November 1920 in Brynrefall, North Wales and joined the Merchant Navy in 1937.

On 17th March 1943 at 0305, Griffiths, then 3rd Mate on King Gruffydd (2) in convoy SC-122 was due to come off watch, when it was struck by a torpedo from submarine U338.

The vessel was under the command of Captain H Griffiths was in position 51.55N 32.41W and on a voyage from New York to Hull via Halifax.
