Frank Cossar was from Evelyn Gardens, Belfast.
He was Chief Officer of the S.S. Clan MacPherson which had left Port Louis, Mauritius four days previously on its way to Calcutta when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat on 1st May 1943.
The sinking took place off the West African coast and he was in the Ocean for some hours before being rescued.
Captain Cossar was subsequently Commended for Brave Conduct.
Frank Cossar passed away on 4th June 1952.
