Obituary - British Powerboat Racing Club

In Memory of Francis Whitley

18 June 1942 – 29 June 2023

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Francis Whitley has passed away following a short illness.

A true veteran of the sport, Francis took part in the Round the Island Race earlier this month and, in characteristic fashion, completed the course with determination and grace.

Since the 2008 Round Britain Race, he had been campaigning his Shakespeare/Campbell boat, Fugitive, building a remarkable record of reliability and performance in offshore racing. His dedication was evident in his consistent participation—missing only two Cowes-Torquay-Cowes races since 2008—and he was proudly crowned the 2022 UKOPRA Class 2 Champion.

Francis was a respected and admired member of the racing community, and his presence will be greatly missed. The club extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones at this difficult time.
