How did you manage to bypass being third officer?

No doubt they were desperate! ....I had been sailing as 4/0 & 3/0 on the Edinburgh Castle.

Most of the 3/0’s in B&C at that time were uncertificated and I was dispatched to the Clan Macgregor to relieve Charlie Wood as soon as I passed second mates.

I seem to recall that Bob Bigwood the Ch Off only had a 1st Mates certificate at the time and all of the 0fficers apart from the Master and Ch Eng were under 30 years old.
