- 1965 – Began maritime career with Clan Line, part of the British & Commonwealth Group.
- December 1968 – Joined Rennies Coasters / Green 'R' Line as Second Officer. Served aboard the m.v. Griqualand, which was sunk by gunfire from HMS Dido in 1970 following an explosion and fire in the cargo. My sextant remains in her chartroom to this day.
- 1973 – Came ashore and joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Concluded my career there in the TV Outside Broadcast Department as a Lighting Engineer and Outside Production Planner.
- 1993 – Returned to sea with Marine Diamond, sailing on the Louis G. Murray.
- 2000 – Relocated to New Zealand and began teaching computer studies.
