Edward Cotswold Bremner

Edward Cotswold Bremner began his maritime career in 1961, sailing with British & Commonwealth. Over the next decade, he held various ranks while serving with Springbok Line, Clan Line, Bowater Shipping, and Union-Castle Line.

In 1970, he joined Portnet (formerly the South African Railways and Harbours Service), working as Mate and later Master on harbour tugs in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. His expertise and leadership led to his appointment as Harbour Pilot in Walvis Bay in 1978, and subsequently in Port Elizabeth in 1982.

He served as Assistant Port Captain in Port Elizabeth until 1996, when he was appointed Port Captain of East London. In 1998, he relocated to Saldanha, and two years later took up the post of Port Captain in Cape Town.

In 2004, Bremner was appointed Chief Harbour Master for the National Ports Authority. He retired in 2006 but remained actively involved in training pilots and tug masters. He fully retired from maritime service in 2012.
