Capt Alaric J Corner

“Larry”

Obituary by Capt Reg Kelso

Captain Alaric J. “Larry” Corner

Captain Alaric J. Corner, affectionately known as “Larry,” was born in 1925. In the darkest days of World War II, at the height of UK shipping losses in 1942, he embarked on his seafaring career as an Apprentice aboard the Fort Abitiri. Operated by Smith Hogg & Co. of Hartlepool for the Ministry of War Transport, the vessel remained his post until 1945. During this period, Larry earned several commendations, including the Atlantic Star, the Burma Star, and the Italy Star.

Following the war, his career progressed along the traditional maritime path. He served as a certificated officer with companies such as Ropners, the Australian Shipping Board, and Furness Withy. He completed the pinnacle of his maritime education by obtaining his Extra Master certificate in 1955.

In 1956, Larry joined the Bowater Steamship Company and, just a year later, was given command of a vessel—reputedly becoming the youngest person ever to do so within the company.

His career took a new direction in 1960 when he joined the UK Department of Transport as a Marine Surveyor. Over the years, he held several key roles including Examiner and Ship Surveyor, eventually specializing in Marine Pollution Control. Notably, he played a critical role in protecting UK interests following the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978. His distinguished service culminated in his promotion to Chief Surveyor—a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1987.

I first met Larry in 1967 when I was appointed Marine Superintendent in Southampton, where he was then serving as a local Board of Trade Surveyor. We shared a connection through our mutual experience commanding Bowater vessels, particularly after the company merged with B&C. Each week, we attended the Fire & Emergency Drill held the day before the Union-Castle mailship's departure, always preceded by a convivial luncheon. Larry’s vivid and humorous stories regularly filled the room with laughter—our table’s mirth was often the liveliest in the Saloon.

Larry became a member of the Cachalots in 1969 and served as Captain of the Club in 1977. He was an active contributor to several committees and remained a popular and regular attendee at Club events, often accompanied by his beloved wife, Marjorie, until her passing. Even after ill health eventually curtailed his involvement, his presence was sorely missed—and still is.
