THE FIRST OF THE NEW SHIPS FOR THE BOWATER PAPER CORPORATION IS LAUNCHED AT GLASGOW:

The newsprint carrier Margaret Bowater is seen going down the slipway at the yards of her builders, William Denny and Brother Limited, after she had been named by Lady Bowater, the wife of Sir Noel Bowater, the chairman of the Corporation and the Lord Mayor of London.

The ship has been specially designed so that large cargoes of newsprint can be loaded and stored in a simple operation, and her holds are free of any obstructions which could cause damage to the paper.

She will be able to carry 8,000 tons of newsprint.

The Bowater fleet lost several ships during the war, and now many of those still in use have become obsolescent.

The Margaret Bowater is the first of a number of new ships.”
