I was a Cadet on the Lanarkshire from 26/4/45 to 28/4/46 and subsequently on the Liberty ship Samderwent then Clan Macgillivary.
Then as 4th Officer on Stiringshire Then 3rd Officer on Clan Mackay until finishing with the Clan Line on 16/5/1950.
My period with Cline Line was only 5 years but a very important one. I transferred to P&O and obtained my Masters in September 1954. and completed my sea-going career in October 1955
Being interested in Industrial Relations, I joined the Australian Stevedoring Industry Board in Sydney in November 1955 as a Port Inspector thus opening opportunities in industry and I moved quickly to executive positions in General Motors-Holdens, Comalco Aluminium and finally to General Manager positions with Castlemaine-Tooheys in Sydney, from 1970 until retiring in 1988 ; shortly after the most unwelcome takeover by Alan Bond & Co.
Being indebted always for the training and experience on HMS Conway and later at sea, I have maintained a continuing interest in the MN. Also I have tried to assist the RSL Merchant Navy sub-branch to promote the wartime history of Allied seamen by creating a greater public awareness.
