Email Received 2 Oct 2020 from his daughter Debbie Andrew
I wondered if you could help please.
My dad used to work for the Union-Castle Line. He was from South Africa and I think did a few trips across to the UK. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of details. I have a copy of a photo but I don't know the dates he worked on the ship.
My father passed away in 1999, so I am unable to ask him myself.
Please could you help with any information / dates if possible please.
His name was Patrick (Paddy) Joseph Burns.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am not sure which ship. Other than he approximately work for Union Castle for 3 years. He started working in approximately 1955 / 1956.
He was in the UK and applied for a job to work his way home back to South Africa.
My uncle says he applied for a deck hand but as he was a Fitter and Tuner he was appointed 6th Engineer.
He worked on the ship and was meant to get off at Cape Town but continued to work for Union-Castle for another 3 years before leaving to go work on an American liner.
