Maiden Voyage - 1930
The New York Times - 25 January 1930
The steamship Markland, built for the Mersey Paper Company, to transport newsprint between Liverpool, N. S., and New York, docked yesterday afternoon at Pier 52, North River, on her maiden trip.
She will be visited today by representatives of New York newspapers, who will be the luncheon guests of C. H. L. Jones, president of the Mersey company. Mr. Jones has been in the city for the last few days and was present to greet his ship on her arrival.
The Markland was built to make thirty trips a year between Liverpool and New York. She has five holds designed specially to carry paper, and is considered an outstanding example of her type of craft. She was built at Hull, England, at a cost of $430,000. She is 327 feet long.
