‘Dick’
Dick Street was instrumental in the success of the South American Saint Line. Here's a brief overview of his contributions and the impact he had on the company:
Founding Barry Shipping Company: In 1926, Dick Street established the Barry Shipping Company in Cardiff. This company primarily operated steam tramps for worldwide voyages, including coal exports to Buenos Aires.
Formation of B & S Shipping Company: In 1933, Barry Shipping merged with the St. Quentin Shipping Company to form the B & S Shipping Company. This merger allowed the company to modernize its fleet, taking advantage of a government scheme to replace old steamers with new ones that included passenger accommodation.
Creation of South American Saint Line: In 1936, with financial backing from Lord Howard de Walden, the company was rebranded as the South American Saint Line. This rebranding marked a new era of growth and expansion for the company.
World War II and Post-War Expansion: During World War II, the company faced significant losses, with 12 vessels lost to enemy action. However, Dick Street's leadership helped the company recover and expand post-war. New passenger/cargo liners like the St. Essylt and St. Thomas were introduced in 1947 and 1948, respectively.
Further Expansion: The company continued to grow, adding ships like the St. John in 1954 and the St. Rosario in 1960. The fleet became well-known for its distinctive red funnels with a black top and the white houseflag with a red diagonal cross.
Sudden Death and Company Dissolution: Unfortunately, Dick Street passed away suddenly in 1961. Without his leadership, the South American Saint Line was wound up in 1965, and its fleet was sold.
Dick Street's vision and leadership were crucial in shaping the South American Saint Line into a prominent shipping company during its time. His contributions left a lasting legacy in maritime history.
