Obtained a post graduate diploma in adult education from the University of Cape Town, 1980.

Studied further to obtain part A of the Master Special Grade Qualification.

Has sat on various government committees and advisory boards, also served as the outside Vice President of the Society of Master Mariners of South Africa,

June 2004 retired from the Cape Technikon.
