After G.B. went to sea in Union Castle “Black Ships”.
1931 caught in the depression swallowed the anchor and entered the Life Insurance Industry.
1940 joined the S.D.F. and served in the examination service, mine sweepers and anti-submarine vessels until appointed X.D.O. (Extended Defence Officer) in Durban. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander and posted to SRI Lanka (Ceylon) as South African Naval Liason Officer, serving in S.E.A.C. (South East Asia Command) in Lord Mountbatten’s Head Quarters.
Demobilised December 1945 and returned to the life insurance industry.
Became Assistant General Manager for Southern Africa and retired in 1971.
