Cmdre W Bainbridge

1894 - 1895

In 1895, RMS Norman (2) grounded near Port Shepstone with slight damage, and Capt Bainbridge was stripped of his command.

Commodore Bainbridge was in command of  R.M.S. "Norman" when she grounded off Port Shepstone in July 1895.  (U-C Line, A Fleet History)

I am certain every navigator on the South African coast must feel great sympathy for Captain Bainbridge because we all 'sniffed the shore' off Port Shepstone trying to keep out of the Agulhas current which could run at 5 knots.
